Hi,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

I appreciate your interest on Windows 10.

Before we proceed I would like you to answer the following question:

  1. Which version of PDF printer driver is running on the computer?

The issue might occur due to some corruption in the driver.

I suggest you to follow the methods below:

Method 1:

Try  to manually install the Adobe PDF printer.

a. Press Windows key + X and select Control Panel.

b. Select Device and printer.

c. Select Add a printer.
d.Select Add a local printer.
e.Check Use an existing port and select Documents\*.pdf (Adobe PDF) from the drop down.  Click Next
f.Click the Have Disk… button.
g.Click the Browse… button.
h.Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF

i.Select AdobePDF.inf from the list if using Acrobat Pro, or AdobePDFstd.inf if using Acrobat Std, then click the OK button
j.You will see many Adobe PDF Converters in the list, however count six down from the top and click Next (you may need to try this numerous times to find the correct Converter from the list that works with your version of Windows)

k.Name your printer, e.g. Adobe PDF

Method 2:

Refer to the following article and check.

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-pdf-printing-acrobat-reader.html

The Adobe pdf printer is part of the Adobe Acrobat X.  I have uninstalled the printer, and manually re-installed it, same problem.  I have reinstalled the Acrobat X, same problem.

I have 8 PCs with vastly different hardware and software.  The Adobe pdf printer is broken on all of these PCs the very moment I upgraded these PCs to Windows 10.  Do a quick search, you'll see many people have the same problems.  I'm pretty sure it's the Windows 10 causing the problem.

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

I would suggest you to install the printer drivers in compatibility mode for previous version of Windows and check.

a. Right click the driver installation file and select Properties then tap or click the Compatibility tab.

b. Place a check in the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box.

c. Tap or click the drop down box and select a previous operating system, then tap or click OK.

d. Try installing the driver and check.

You may refer to: Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows (information holds good for Windows 10 as well)

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

Microsoft, can you fix this please?  Your customer service should be better than this.  Thanks.

Thanks for your feedback.

Here is a solution that worked for us.

  • Right-click the Windows-Button on the left
  • Click "R"
  • in run type regedit
  • HEYKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SOFTWARE
  • ACROBAT PDF MAKER

change the permission to full control .

That's it.

Cheers

Hi Kolemup,

Thank you very much for your reply.  I've tried it, and could not seem to find a registry under pdfmaker related to permission.  Can you be more specific please?  Thanks in advance.

For reference, I have Windows 10 Pro (not yet anniversary edition) with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro

I could not use Adobe PDF Printer with any application/program, printing a test page from the printer page produced an error "handle is invalid".

I tried...

1> Open "Settings | Printers" - Right-click Adobe PDF, pick "Properties".  On my PC, the selected port was "COM10:" - this should be generic "Documents\*.pdf", possibly "Desktop\*.pdf", or maybe point to a specific folder. Note 4 below!

2> That did not help me so I used a bigger hammer.  Open "Settings | Printers" - Right-click Adobe PDF, run as Administrator, Delete (and wait a bit).  Then, reboot to clean up removal.  After boot, open "Adobe Acrobat XI Pro" and click on "Help | Repair Acrobat Installation".  Finally, re-open "Settings | Printers" - Right-click Adobe PDF, pick "Open | Printer | Printing Preferences..." and check the setting for Adobe PDF Folder - this should be "Documents\*.pdf", possibly "Desktop\*.pdf",  (for me, the button to browse to a specific folder does not work).

3> I see that when the PDF is opened after it is generated, it is using the Windows "Edge" browser to view.  Next stop is "Default Programs | Associate a file type or protocol with a program" where you can change the default program from Edge to Acrobat for the "pdf" extension.

4> It does not seem possible (as before) to pick the file name/folder before the file is generated.  Perhaps the best is to change the port to "Desktop\*.pdf".  You may want to go to "Settings | Printers" - Right-click Adobe PDF, pick "Properties" and "Ports".  Add a port, pick "Adobe PDF Port Monitor" and browse to select the folder you want PDFs sent.

Hi Rcpeka,

Thanks for the reply.  I tried your suggestions, and found the port was already at Documents\.  I did the Acrobat repair, and also tried to change the port to Desktop\, none of them seemed to solve the problem.

It's amazing after over one year, the two big companies, Microsoft and Adobe, do not seem to care to fix this problem!

Hi, xlu -

My solution did not "stick" on my PC.  I had another idea, to also turn off the Microsoft PDF printer -  It seems to help, but we'll see if that stays in effect.

Go to "Control Panel | Programs and Features" and select (left side) "Turn Windows features on or off" and deselect "Microsoft Print to PDF".

This is an update to my earlier answer. For reference, I have Windows 10 Pro (not yet anniversary edition) with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.

>Uninstall Adobe Acrobat XI Pro (make sure you have the license or whatever to reinstall).
>Turn off the Microsoft PDF printer.  Go to "Control Panel | Programs and Features", select (left side) "Turn Windows features on or off" and deselect "Microsoft Print to PDF".
>Reboot (just for grins?)
>Reinstall Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.
>Check the Adobe PDF printer setup.  Go to "Printers", right-click "Adobe PDF" printer, pick "Printing Preferences...", turn on "View Adobe PDF results" (if you like).  You should also be able to pick the output file location.
>I see that when the PDF is opened after it is generated, it is using the Windows "Edge" browser to view.  Next stop is "Default Programs | Associate a file type or protocol with a program" where you can change the default program from Edge to Acrobat for the "pdf" extension.

This is working for me, and it seems to be stable (for a couple of days, so far).  Good Luck!
